Looking for a Kyno alternative? An honest map of what’s left
Kyno was the tool that made local footage organizing feel effortless: Mac-native, no server, pay once. Then it was acquired, went quiet for four years, and resurfaced with a modest update. If you’re deciding whether to stay or move in 2026, here is the honest lay of the land — including where our own app fits and where it doesn’t.
Where Kyno stands in 2026
Signiant acquired Kyno’s maker in 2020, primarily for the technology. What followed was four years of near-silence — long enough that “is Kyno dead?” became a recurring question in editing communities. In September 2025 a 1.9 update arrived: Apple Silicon-native, refreshed UI. That proved the product is alive, but it was maintenance, not momentum, and Kyno’s roadmap under an enterprise file-transfer company remains an open question.
Stated plainly: Kyno 1.9 still works and is still sold. What is uncertain is the future — new macOS releases, new cameras, new codecs — not what it does today.
What Kyno users actually loved
Talking to (and reading) Kyno loyalists, the recurring themes are: browse any folder or card without importing, see everything instantly, log and organize locally, transcode what you need, and never touch a server or a subscription. Any honest alternative has to be measured against that feeling of lightness.
The options
- Stay on Kyno 1.9 — it does today what it does; the open risk is future macOS and camera compatibility on an uncertain roadmap.
- Jumper — AI-driven, on-device visual and spoken-word search that lives inside your NLE. A search layer, not a standalone library and not a pipeline.
- Enterprise MAM (CatDV, axle ai, etc.) — server-based, priced per seat, and a different world from Kyno’s install-and-go spirit.
- Launchr Post — our app: a local, one-time-purchase pipeline where organizing is one stage among several. Automatic sorting by metadata, on-device transcription of every word, search across filenames and speech, RAW proxies, an editor handover package — and client review links, so the finished cut gets approved without your client creating an account.
How Launchr Post organizes footage
Point it at cards, dumps or whole project folders and it walks everything recursively, reads the metadata, and separates camera, production sound, drone and junk deterministically. Speech is transcribed on-device with Whisper, so a whole shoot day becomes searchable — type a phrase and jump to the exact timecode where it’s said. Drag in a finished Premiere .prproj or FCP7 XML and it identifies which clips actually made the timeline. Nothing is uploaded anywhere; there is no account.
The philosophical difference from Kyno: Kyno is a workbench you operate — you browse, tag, rename, transcode by hand. Launchr Post is a pipeline you feed — it sorts, syncs, transcribes and packages on its own, and its output is a cut-ready handover for your editor.
What Launchr Post does not do
- No manual logging toolkit. No tags, star ratings, subclips or batch renaming. If hand-curation is the heart of your workflow, Kyno-style tools still serve that better.
- Not a general media player/browser. It builds a searchable library from your footage; it isn’t a browse-any-folder viewer.
- No arbitrary batch transcoding. Proxies are purpose-built for editing (H.264, plus RAW proxies via Resolve, Media Encoder or Compressor) — it is not a general-purpose format converter.
- Mac only, Apple Silicon only. No Windows version.
