Looking for an OffShoot alternative? Here’s an honest answer

Published July 28, 2026 · updated July 31, 2026 · 6 min read · Launchr Post Guides

OffShoot is a very good offload tool, and this page won’t pretend otherwise. But people searching this phrase are usually reacting to one of two things: the yearly renewal, or the feeling that offload is only the first of five chores. Since version 0.1.46 Launchr Post does checksum‑verified offload too — and then keeps going through sync, proxies, organizing, handover and client approval, for €99 once. Here is the honest comparison, including where OffShoot is still the safer call.

Why this search exists

OffShoot is the app formerly known as Hedge — renamed in 2023, and widely treated as the de-facto standard for media offload on the Mac. Two things send its users searching. First, price: OffShoot runs $169 (Pro $249) with a yearly renewal to keep receiving updates — a big step up from the roughly $39 of the early Hedge era, and the renewal model rubs one-time-purchase people the wrong way. Second, scope: OffShoot deliberately does one thing — verified copying. Everything after the copy (sync, proxies, organizing, transcription, handover) is other apps, some of them sold separately.

The honest scorecard

Launchr Post offloads cards with checksums as of version 0.1.46. It reads the card once, writes to one or more destinations, then reads every copy back from the destination’s own disk and compares its checksum with the source — a file is only called verified when every destination you picked is proven, and “only partly secured” when it isn’t. The report lands next to the footage as JSON, plain text and MHL‑like XML, and an interrupted copy resumes from its journal.

Where OffShoot is still the safer call — and there are exactly two cases: you need Windows (Launchr Post is Apple Silicon only), or you need an ASC MHL a facility will validate (ours is MHL‑like — SHA‑256, not the xxHash the standard uses). Those are real technical blockers and we will not talk you out of them. On age, for the record: our offload shipped in July 2026. That is young, which is precisely why every copy is read back from the destination’s own disk and hashed again before we call it verified — and why the report lands next to the footage, where a producer can check the claim instead of trusting it.

If your frustration is everything after the copy — or paying a renewal to keep getting updates — that’s exactly the ground Launchr Post covers, as one pipeline instead of a stack of separate purchases.

Other tools’ prices change; verify on their sites. This reflects what we could verify in July 2026. And to be clear: this is a comparison of scope and model, not a claim that any of these apps is bad at what it does.

Two pipelines that work today

Either the whole day lives in one app — card in, verified copies out, then sync, proxies, transcription, handover and a client link — or you keep offloading with the tool you already trust and drop the offloaded folders into Launchr Post the moment you’re back. Both are supported on purpose: nothing in the app requires you to use its own offload, and we would rather be the honest second opinion than sell you a checkbox.
